Signature and DCAL Partner to Strengthen British Sign Language Teacher Training

We are pleased to announce a partnership with the Deafness, Cognition and Language (DCAL) Research Centre at University College London (UCL). The collaboration aims to support high-quality teacher training in preparation for the introduction of the new BSL GCSE.

Signature have been supporting the development, of the recently announced programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for teachers, created to upskill those interested in teaching BSL in schools.

The first of the CPD course is: BSL Linguistics for Teachers.

BSL Linguistics for Teachers

This course on BSL Linguistics, taught by leading experts in BSL linguistics, provides an up-to-date introduction to the scientific study of British Sign Language – how it is structured, how it is used, how it varies and how it changes. Focus is on current understanding of how BSL works, based on the latest research.

The courses on “Language Learning in Multilingual Context for Teachers” and “Teaching in Primary and Secondary Schools” will follow.

Lindsay Foster, Executive Director at Signature said:

“I am really pleased to have supported DCAL on this project.

This course reflects both academic excellence and the lived experience of the Deaf community, supporting teachers to deliver BSL with confidence, authenticity, and integrity. The team at DCAL are linguistic experts and we thrilled to have been involved in supporting them to get this course available for BSL teachers. It will ensure that BSL teachers are given the best possible CPD training.
