Signature is once again proud to be supporting Sign Language Week 2022, the campaign is run on an annual basis by the British Deaf Association (BDA).
The theme for Sign Language Week 2022 is: “BSL Brings Us Together”.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage people of all ages across the UK to take up the challenge of learning BSL for themselves and find out more about the language and culture of the Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing British people for whom BSL is their first or preferred language.
The positive impact of BSL on thousands of Deaf and hard of hearing people are often underappreciated. The goal is to make everyone realise the importance of BSL, and how awareness can make a big difference.
We want to encourage as many people as possible to learn BSL. That is why we have created a BSL resource pack that schools, clubs and individuals are free to download, within the pack you will find:
- Fingerspelling charts
- Basic BSL resources – including greetings, numbers, colours, family, days of the week, seasons.
As well as the resource pack, we have also had printed and will be providing 250 BSL Greeting boards to primary schools, which we hope will encourage children to give BSL a go.
Lindsay Foster, Executive Director at Signature said: “We are delighted once again to be supporting Sign Language Week, it’s a campaign that we have supported for many years now.
This year’s theme ‘BSL Brings Us Together, really resonates with us. From the togetherness, we have felt as an organisation with our centres, teachers and learners over the last 24 months during the Covid pandemic, but also the togetherness we are seeing from the sector as organisations work together to bring forward the BSL Bill.
It’s going to be a really special week!
As an organisation, we have a lot going on to promote BSL, the culture of Deaf people, along with promoting our BSL courses and qualifications.
Then at the end of this week, we have the BSL Bill 3rd reading, which coincides with the BSL Rally on Parliament Square Garden, where we hope to see the bill move towards the latter stages of becoming a legal act.”
