Northampton Town’s social media Goal Gifs have been recorded with a slight difference this season!
Instead of the usual mix of quirky goal celebrations the GIFS, (which we hope will be seen as often as possible across our social media platforms this season!), will have the players sign their initials and their squad number in British Sign Language.
The initiative, led by supporter Abbie Davies, is a gesture of support towards the club’s deaf supporters to help raise awareness of British Sign Language.
“We were delighted to have Abbie come along and to show our support,” said skipper Jon Guthrie.
“We know we have a number of supporters who use British Sign Language and we hope this helps raise awareness.
“The more goals we score, the more views the Goal Gifs will get and that will only be good news for everyone.”
“I still remember when I was a mascot at 8 years old, Clarke Carlisle signed to me in BSL (British Sign Language), and this made me feel so special,” said Abbie Davies.
“He was famous to me and having that recognition that someone I looked up to and watched every week, knew how to communicate with me!
“I approached Tom Cliffe with this idea, who loved the sound of it, so I was delighted that we managed to make it happen. I had a fun day teaching the players their initials and squad number, as well as a few other signs. Like all people, some players picked it up easier than others. I also hope that the younger fans, will look up to their favourite player and want to learn BSL.”
If you are interested in learning British Sign Language, please feel free to contact Abbie on daviesabbie20@gmail.com and she can signpost you.
