CSW Consultation

I Sign

Deaf students face too many barriers in education. Statistics show this is an issue of access, not ability. There are too few appropriately trained communication support workers and little current access to appropriate training. CSWs working with deaf students have been calling for qualifications and professional recognition for some time.

Research undertaken as part of the I-Sign Project formally identifies the need to develop a qualification for CSWs based on National Occupational Standards (NOS).

As part of its contribution to the I-Sign Project, Signature has been working with CSWs and their representative bodies to develop the content of a qualification. We've reached the stage where we are required by the regulators formally to seek the views of stakeholders on our proposals.

We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the development of the proposal published in the consultation document below. We ask that you consider the proposal and let us know your views by responding formally by completing the electronic questionnaire. The formal consultation will close on Monday 22 February 2010.

If you will be meeting with colleagues to consider the proposal, we have available a powerpoint presentation that assists discussions. If you would like a copy, please email Joanne.Wears@signature.org.uk
