Ellah Kandi, Action Deafness

East Midlands Regional Learner of the Year

Ellah recently gained her Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language with Action Deafness.

Ellah is part of a church that has only one BSL/English interpreter. If the interpreter is unable to attend a service the Deaf members of the congregation can not be involved. This has inspired Ellah to learn and her ambition is to become a BSL/English interpreter in the future.

She has taught some basic signs to the members of the Emmanuel Apostolic Gospel Choir which she attends. She also signs songs as the choir sings. Deaf people are always delighted to see someone sign as the choir sings.

Ellah never misses a British Sign Language class, she takes time in the evening to practice and buys books and videos to help with her studies. She gives her learning a high personal priority.

Ellah has contributed to the wider activities and vision of Action Deafness by becoming an invaluable volunteer.
