Charlie Butler, aged 59, from the Musical Signers organisation, has come out on top in a regional heat in the Signature Annual Awards scheme and now progresses to the final in London on November 12. A Reading lip speaker has been nominated in a national award scheme. Sara Scanlon, of Melrose Avenue, East Reading, has been a freelance lip speaker for 12 years, helping deaf people at work, in court, in hospital or in education. Read more

Dorothy Hegarty, founder of Hands That Talk in Dungiven, has been nominated for an award with Signature, the qualifications awarding body for signed languages and other methods of communication used by deaf and deafblind people.
