Hands That Talk Delighted to be Nominated

Many people deserve recognition or tneir dedicated efforts to overcome barriers to communication between deaf and hearing people and the Signature Annual Awards provide that recognition. Carol Cook was brought up in a bi-lingual home - with signing her first language. Her parents were both profoundly deaf so she was introduced to sign language as a baby. Five years ago Carol who lives in Hockley, decided to teach signing, and has just scooped a prestigious award for her commitment to the language.

Black Cats charity worker Ryan Williams has scored in a top awards scheme. The 18-year-old, who works for the SAFC Foundation, teaches sign language to children across the region. Now his dedication has been rewarded after winning the regional heat in the Signature Annual Awards, which aim to recognise those who help break down barriers between deaf and hearing people.

An Inspirational Derry man has been rewarded for his commitment to teaching sign language. Richard McFadden won a regional heat of the Signature Annual Awards and now progresses to the final in London on November 12. Mr McFadden has been a sign language tutor for the past 16 years, teaching deaf-related courses in British Sign Language, Irish Sign Language, Deaf and Deafblind Awareness and Communication Tactics.

Wigan Teacher Wins Top Award

A Notts tutor has scooped an award for his commitment to teaching sign language. John Smith from West Notts College in Mansfield, won a regional heat in the Signature Annual Awards scheme and progresses to the final in London on November 12. John uses a variety of teaching methods to make his students feel relaxed and build their confidence when signing. He has also made several videos of friends signing to promote deaf awareness.

The Communication Professional of the Year, Joseph Maitland Robinson Award and Organisational Achievement acknowledge those whose contribution moves us all further toward achieving a society in which deaf people have full access.
