Story from South Wales Argus: A Gwent Police Community Support Officer is up for an award after taking it upon himself to learn sign language. Mike Patterson, who is based in the Maindee police station, decided that he wanted to be able to communicate with deaf people and began learning in his spare time. He has reached Level 2 British Sign Language (BSL) after studying for 18 months with CHIIC, a training organisation specialising in deaf and disability issues and which also nominated him for the award.
