A group of people recognised for their achievements in deaf communication came a step closer to winning a prestigious award this week.
Signature, the charity that champions excellence in communication with deaf people, has announced the shortlists and Ailsa Flett, development worker with Fife Council’s social work services has been shortlisted for Teacher of the Year in their regional categories as part of the Signature Annual Awards scheme.
Based in Kirkcaldy, the Sensory Impairment Centre provides a wide range of support offering information, support and advice on deafness and making services and information accessible to deaf people and Ailsa has been working there for two and a half years.
The awards are designed to recognise and reward those who have made, in their own way, a significant contribution toward achieving a society in which deaf and deafblind people have full access. Teacher of the Year has attracted record nominations for strong candidates who have inspired colleagues and students alike with their commitment.
Ailsa, who teaches British Sign Language to both children and adults, is delighted to have been shortlisted. She commented: "I am so pleased to have been shortlisted for this award. What is important for me is raising awareness of the vast range of support that is out there for deaf and deafblind people in Fife. We are here to help – so we want to encourage those in the community in need of assistance to contact our team to get the support they need."
