Story from Belfast Telegraph Evening – An employee of Strabane District Council has been shortlisted by Signature, the charity that champions excellence in communication with deaf people.
John Connolly, caretaker at Melvin Sports Complex, has been shortlisted for the Regional Learner of the Year as part of the Signature Annual Awards scheme. The awards are designed to recognise and reward those who have made, in their own way, a significant contribution towards achieving a society in which deaf and deafblind people have full access.
Signature Chief Executive, Jim Edwards, said: "We’ve been thrilled by the variety of teachers and learners nominated for the Signature Annual Awards this year. Those individuals shortlisted are truly remarkable and have clearly made a huge impression on the people who nominated them. It will be hard to pick our winners as they all deserve so much credit."
John added: "I have been signing British Sign Language for more than five years now. It is wonderful to be involved in deaf culture. I am also pleased that Strabane District Council is supportive of my studies as a means of increasing communication between deaf and hearing people."
John, who is studying British Sign Language Level 3 at Foyle Sign Language Centre in Derry also volunteers for the RNID.
"It’s a great way to meet like minded people and learn about deaf awareness and deaf issues. Richard McFadden has been an inspirational tutor and mentor to all of us," said John.
