Sign of Success

Story from the Sunderland Echo.

Black Cats charity worker Ryan Williams has scored in a top awards scheme.

The 18-year-old, who works for the SAFC Foundation, teaches sign language to children across the region.

Now his dedication has been rewarded after winning the regional heat in the Signature Annual Awards, which aim to recognise those who help break down barriers between deaf and hearing people.

Ryan, of Roker, started as a trainee in the coaching department at the foundation and became involved with the charity's sign language programme.

Ryan visits schools across the North East. He helps boost youngsters' communication skills by using their love of football to introduce them to sign language.

Signature chief executive Jim Edwards said: "We've been thrilled by the variety of individuals and organisations engaging with the awards scheme and it's fantastic that we are able to provide some recognition for all their hard work."

"At only 18 years of age, Ryan has become a positive role model among local schoolchildren through his involvement in the sign language and coaching programme.'His continued learning of British Sign Language will not only help his personal development but also that of the foundation.'Ryan will now attend an awards ceremony in London in November with eight other candidates from across Britain to see who will be crowned as learner of the year."

Former Monkwearmouth School pupil Ryan said: "When I was growing up, I never thought I would be a teacher, but I really enjoy doing it.'The kids love it, especially because of the association with the football club. The programme really helps to simplify sign language."
