Story from the Mansfield & Ashfield Recorder.
A Notts tutor has scooped an award for his commitment to teaching sign language. John Smith, from West Notts College, in Mansfield, has won a regional heat in the Signature Annual Awards scheme.
He now progresses to the final in London on November 12.
John uses a variety of teaching methods to make his students feel relaxed and build their confidence when signing.
He has also made several videos of Mends signing which he uses to promote deaf awareness.
John will now be invited to attend a London awards ceremony to be held at the Private Rooms of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Buckingham Gate.
He will be up against 11 other candidates from across the UK to be crowned Signature's first ever Teacher of the Year.
Signature chief executive, Jim Edwards, said: "We've been thrilled by the variety of individuals and organisations engaging with the awards scheme and it's fantastic that we are able to provide some recognition.
"John is an encouraging teacher of British Sign Language, known for his great sense of humour and positive approach."
