The founder of the Foyle Sign Language Centre has been recognised for his commitment to improving the communication skills of deaf people. Richard McFadden has been a sign language tutor for the past 16 years, establishing the Foyle Sign Language Centre in 1995.

Now the 51 year-old has a chance of being named the UK's Teacher of the Year after being winning the Northern Ireland regional heat of the annual Signature Awards.

Mr McFadden now progresses to the final in London on November 12. There are 11 other regional finalists.

The inaugural Signature Awards aim to recognise those who have made a " significant contribution towards a society in which deaf people have full access."

Judges said Mr McFadden's regional award was testament to his commitment to ensuring deaf people have full access to society.

"He is an excellent motivator who paces his lessons and develops the skills of his students in a very learner friendly way. Richard has inspired his learners with his great sense of humour, his sincerity and his respect. He is patient and adept at managing different abilities in the classroom. Richard goes the extra mile for his students.

"He also encourages a greater understanding of deaf culture through his teaching and encourages students to engage with deaf people as a means of learning and integration."

"He has on occasion celebrated with the class at the end of each module by taking them out to a social event where his students were able to use their sign language skills within the local community."
